University of Toronto Strengthens Its Global Research Reputation

The University of Toronto (U of T) has achieved a major milestone in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), taking the top position for research output among publicly funded universities in North America. U of T recorded a research-output score of 75.1, ahead of UCLA at 59.8 

The ranking evaluates research output based on the number of academic papers indexed in major scientific and social science databases. Among the six indicators used by ARWU, research publications account for 20% of the overall assessment. 
 

U of T also improved its global standing, ranking 13th worldwide for research and academic performance, compared with 14th last year. The result highlights the university’s strong research contribution and further strengthens Canada’s reputation in global higher education.
