Canada Sees Decline in International Student Intake Amid Policy Tightening

There has been a notable decline in the number of international student permits issued recently in Canada, according to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data. The decline has affected the international students significantly, especially the Indian students, who form the largest groups of overseas applicants.

According to the reports, compared to the previous years, the study permit approvals have come down significantly as the immigration policies have become tighter and verification processes have become stricter. Several reasons, such as the increased financial requirements, stricter verification of documents and applications, and the efforts by the government to lower the pressure of housing and infrastructure in Canada have been linked to the decline.

Canada continues to be preferred by international students for higher education because of the country's quality institutions, post-study work opportunities, and pathways to permanent residency. But the students now have more competition and a more selective visa process. Therefore, submitting a complete and accurate application, demonstrating enough financial capacity, and selecting Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) aligned with academic and career goals of the student have become more important than ever.
