In the 2024-2025 academic year, Ireland’s higher education sector has recorded a fourth consecutive year of growth in international student enrolment. As per the recent data, the total foreign enrolments increased by just over 10% year after year, reaching 45,000 student enrolments for the first time.
The sustained growth over the years indicates Ireland’s popularity as a global study destination. International students take up a significant share in the growing student population of Ireland. 74% of total foreign enrolments in the Irish universities are non-EU students. India leads among them, driving the overall growth trend, followed by the United States and China. The percentage of Indian students increased by 30% year-over-year in 2024-2025. The growth in the 2024-2025 academic year was broadly balanced across study levels, with undergraduate enrolments rising by 9% and postgraduate numbers increasing by 11%.
The reasons why international students prefer Ireland and the continuous growth of student enrolments are due to factors such as high-quality education, favourable post-study work opportunities, affordability, increasing global demand for English-taught programmes, a supportive environment, and safety. However, certain concerns, like challenges in finding housing and costs of living in major cities, remain.
Thus, the growing number of international student enrolments confirms the increasing popularity of Ireland as a major destination in the global international education market.
