Ontario has come up with a new points-based scoring system for candidates who are applying for provincial nomination through the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream (OWPS). The scoring system is expected to give greater transparency in the province's immigration selection process.
Candidates who are eligible under the new framework are to be ranked taking into consideration several factors such as occupation, wage, job location, work experience, education, language proficiency, Canadian study credentials, and temporary resident status. Applicants can earn up to 140 points, with the highest-ranking candidates receiving invitations to apply for a provincial nomination.
The three pathways in which the new scoring system is applicable under the OWPS are the TEER 0–3 pathway for higher-skilled occupations, the TEER 4–5 pathway for intermediate and entry-level occupations, and the Self-Employed Physicians pathway. Physicians, however, will be assessed through a separate evaluation process.
The new system will give candidates a clearer understanding of how they are evaluated and ranked. It is also expected to align the immigration with Ontario's labour market needs by giving importance to candidates whose skills and experience match workforce shortages across the province.
