Australia Extends Biometrics Requirements to Visa Applicants in India

With effect from October 26, 2026, the Australian Government has extended its biometrics requirements to visa applicants in India. Applicants may now be required to provide fingerprints and a facial image in support of new applications lodged on or after that date. The measure, announced by the Australian High Commission in India, brings India into line with the nearly 60 countries in which Australia already collects biometric information from visa applicants.

The requirement does not apply automatically to every applicant. The Department of Home Affairs determines which applicants must provide biometrics and notifies them by email, either directly or through their authorised representative. Applications lodged before October 26, 2026 and visas already granted remain unaffected. Biometrics may be provided at one of 16 Australian Biometrics Collection Centres operated by VFS Global or, where eligible, through the Australian Immi App.

Applicants are advised to await the formal request before booking an appointment and to comply promptly, as any delay may affect processing times.
