International students studying at participating Ontario universities will now have to pay a 20% increase in mandatory health insurance fees. This higher fee will be effective from September 1, 2026. Thus, the annual cost of the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) for an individual student will increase from $792 to $948 which will add $156 to the yearly expense.
UHIP is compulsory for most international students at participating institutions, and the premium is generally added directly to their university accounts. Only students who meet specific exemption requirements such as having OHIP coverage, an approved alternative insurance plan, diplomatic status, or government-sponsored coverage, may opt out.
UHIP covers essential medical services. This includes healthcare services such as doctor visits, diagnostic tests, emergency care and also hospital surgeries. It has a coverage of up to $1 million per policy year. Students will have to have additional insurance for expenses such as prescription drugs, dental care, and vision services.
