Canada’s permanent resident admissions are currently below the pace needed to meet the country’s 2026 immigration target. In the first half of the year, Canada welcomed 155,800 new permanent residents, which accounted for roughly 41% of the annual target of 380,000.
The economic immigration category made up the largest share, with 89,200 admissions recorded by the end of June. The annual target for this category is 239,800. The family category contributed 45,100 admissions against a yearly target of 84,000, while 17,900 refugees and protected persons were admitted during the same period.
When two one-time measures for protected persons and in-Canada workers are included, Canada’s effective 2026 admissions target rises to 446,000. Total admissions under the broader target reached approximately 182,100 by mid-year, or around 40.8%.
With fewer than half of the planned admissions completed by June, Canada would need to increase its monthly admissions during the remaining months of 2026 to achieve the overall target. The figures provide an important indication of Canada’s current immigration pace and could be closely watched by prospective permanent residence applicants.
