Ontario Expands Licensing Opportunities for Foreign-Trained Doctors in Canada

Ontario is expanding its pathway for internationally trained family doctors. A $20 million investment is expected to create 200 additional assessment positions by 2028–29.

The expansion of the Practice Ready Ontario program is designed to help experienced physicians qualify to practice in the province without completing the traditional two-year residency pathway. Eligible candidates may instead undergo a 12-week clinical field assessment. It could potentially speed up the licensing process. The initiative also includes a dedicated pathway for French-speaking physicians and aims to address doctor shortages, particularly in rural and northern Ontario.

Applicants must meet the program’s eligibility criteria, including education, professional experience and language requirements. They must also be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and commit to three years of supervised practice in Ontario. The initiative could create more opportunities for qualified foreign-trained doctors already eligible to work in Canada.
