Canada is scheduled to implement new reforms to its Express Entry immigration system on 3rd November this year. A revised points structure is aimed at attracting skilled professionals in occupations that offer higher wages. The reforms were announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on October 16.
Under the revised Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), candidates will earn up to 100 additional points for qualifying high-wage job offers. Applicants with at least 12 months of qualifying Canadian work experience in these occupations may also earn additional points, with the maximum set at 70, depending on the applicable wage category.
The eligible occupations cover several sectors. It includes healthcare, engineering, information technology, education and skilled trades. However, the points awarded will depend on the occupation's classification and wage level. The revised framework will also remove the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) requirement for qualifying job offers used for CRS points or certain program eligibility purposes. Other job-offer and employer requirements will remain in place.
Following implementation, IRCC plans to recalculate existing candidates' CRS scores. Express Entry invitation rounds will be temporarily suspended during the process, which could take up to two weeks.
