The Canadian Immigration Minster Fraser confirmed an 18 months extension for the holders of Post Graduate Work Permits (PGWP)s.
Previously the pauses in the draws affected many PGWP holders, and this recent announcement is good news for all anticipating a permit expiry in 2023. Now they can work conveniently for more extended periods and will be able to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Effective April 6, 2023, many international students and workers can renew their permits and work peacefully in Canada. As per the statistics by the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), almost 127,000 permits were expected to get expired in 2023. Another 67,000 PGWP holders are already in the process of obtaining their Permanent Residence PR status. So, they don’t have to look forward to the PGWP extension in 2023.
Free Study Abroad AssessmentThe PGWP holders whose documents already expired in 2023 and people who were eligible for the previous PGWP extension in 2022 will be able to resume their status with this new facilitative measure by the Canadian government. Even people who have their documents expired and are past the 90-day restoration time will get short-term work authorization, and they can wait to process the applications for their work permits.
It has been quite a few months since the Canadian government was slightly under pressure from the many PGWP holders who earnestly wanted an extension. Previously too, Mister Fraser had to make an exception for the PGWP documents that needed an extension between September 2021 and December 31, 2022.
As the Express Entry system is restarted, the least cut-off score required to get an invitation and apply for a PR has increased exponentially. The cut-off score was 490 points for the last Express Entry held and way too high for even people who hold a bachelor’s degree, are 30 years old, possess excellent language proficiency and have one year of work experience.
Jon Reys, the Immigration Minister of Manitoba, much appreciated the idea of this new facilitative measure for this many PGWPs. Earlier this week, he conveyed his thoughts regarding the same to Fraser.
