Newfoundland and Labrador launches New Priority Skills Immigration Stream

The Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador has launched a new immigration stream for skilled workers, named Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundland and Labrador opened the Program in January 2021. Describing the objectives of the new pathway, Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, said: “This new focus in Priority Skills for immigration builds on the gathering momentum to attract and retain more newcomers with fresh ideas and perspectives for growth.” The stream allows highly educated and highly skilled immigrants with specialized work experience in areas that experience a shortage of labor in the province, such as technology and ocean sciences, to move to Newfoundland and Labrador.

To apply under this stream, the applicants must have at least one year of work experience in one of the province’s highly skilled and high-demand occupations. International students who have completed a postgraduate degree or Doctorate at the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador within the past three years may also apply. The candidates can apply either through the PNP or the Express Entry system.

Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador Expression of Interest

The Priority Skills Newfoundland and Labrador operate based on an Expression of Interest(EoI) system. Those applying for immigration under this stream may submit an EOI to the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program(NLPNP). If they are found eligible under either Skilled worker or Express Entry Skilled Worker, they will receive a provincial nomination. This nomination will support the candidate’s subsequent application for permanent residence in Canada. The province is planning to issue between 250 and 350 ITAs annually under the Program.

The province’s employers who have accounts with the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism can view the questionnaire score, language ability, education, and work experience. The employers can also vote on whether a candidate would be successful or not in their companies
