Difference between a Canada student visa and a study permit

Getting your Canadian student visa ready is a significant and necessary hurdle for any international student as you can't enter the country without it! But here's a crucial thing to remember: the visa isn't the only important document you're going to need. You also require a Canadian study permit!

As you plan your studies in Canada, you'll see the terms "study permit" and "student visa" used everywhere. Even though they sound like the same thing, they are absolutely not identical. Knowing the difference between the two is key to avoiding confusion, application delays, or problems when you travel. Let's break down exactly what you need to know before you arrive in Canada.

What is a Canada Study Permit?

A study permit is an official document issued by Canadian immigration that actually gives you permission to stay in Canada while you're studying. If your program lasts six months or longer, applying for this permit isn't optional; it's absolutely mandatory if you want to study legally.

The permit does more than just let you enroll; it outlines certain conditions, like whether you’re allowed to work part-time while in school. It also dictates what happens when your program finishes. For example, it might give you a grace period (for example, 90 days) to apply for another permit or get ready to head home.

What is a Canada Student Visa?

The term "student visa" is where a lot of the confusion happens, because technically, Canada doesn't always issue a document officially named "student visa." What people usually mean is either the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which one you get depends on your home country.

Think of the TRV or eTA as your entry ticket. It's the document that actually allows you to enter Canada. If your nationality requires a TRV, you absolutely must secure this visa (or eTA) in addition to your study permit before you travel.

Here’s the key distinction: the TRV/eTA only gives you entry, it does not give you the right to study. Once you land, it's the study permit that officially authorizes you to study and stay for the entire length of your program. For students from countries like India, the rule is pretty clear: you must have your study permit approval and all other necessary paperwork finalized before you leave your country.

How does a Study Permit benefit you?

The Study Permit is basically your legal permission to pursue your studies in Canada.

It costs CAD 150, and you definitely need it if your course is six months or longer. If you're just taking a short course for under six months, you don't need to worry about this one.

The permit document itself is quite detailed: it explains why you're in Canada, outlines any restrictions you have (like working), and confirms the educational program you're enrolled in.

After finishing your study program, the permit gives you a 90-day validity period. If you want to stay and work in Canada after graduating, you'll need to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) during that time. The PGWP is beneficial as it provides international graduates from Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) with an open work permit, which allows for valuable Canadian work experience.

Requirements for Study Permit in Canada

Before submitting your study permit application, Indian students (and other international applicants) must ensure they have all the required documents in order. Here are the items you will usually require:

  • Acceptance Letter: An official letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
  • Passport: A valid passport or travel document.
  • Proof of Funds: You must show that you have enough money to pay for your tuition, living expenses, return travel, and support any family members who come with you. This usually includes bank statements, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), or proof of an education loan.
  • Intent to Leave: Evidence proving you plan to leave Canada once your studies are complete.
  • Medical Exam: An Immigration Medical Examination (IME). Students from India often need to complete this.
  • Custody (if minor): If you are under 18, you’ll need a custodian declaration. If you plan to study in Quebec, you'll likely need an additional certificate (like a CAQ).

Keeping Your Study Permit Valid While in Canada

Once you've arrived and settled into your program, maintaining your study permit is just as critical as obtaining it. This means you must:

  • Dedicate yourself to full-time studies at your DLI.
  • Follow any and all work conditions specified on your permit.
  • Notify the Canadian government promptly if you change your address or personal information.
  • Renew or extend your permit prior to expiration, particularly if you choose to switch schools or programs.

Navigating the Canadian immigration process can feel overwhelming at first, but knowing the core distinction is a critical first step: Your visa gets you into the country; your study permit allows you to stay and pursue your education. You need both for a successful international student journey.

As you prepare for your future in Canada, stay organized, and take the time to really understand your responsibilities as a permit holder. A smooth arrival starts with preparation and having all your paperwork sorted.
