Can I study in Canada without IELTS?

Is it necessary for you to prove your proficiency in English with the results of an accepted language test to get admission in a Canada higher education institution?

Most universities and colleges require applicants to demonstrate their language proficiency through recognized tests, but there are exemptions too. It is ideal for a student to familiarize themselves with language requirements for studying their favourite course in Canada before going ahead with the application.

Language requirements in higher education institutions

The language requirements for international students vary in each higher education institution. While some of them have rigorous requirements for English proficiency, some others have relaxed requirements.

Before applying for a course in Canada, a student must do thorough research about the language requirements set by the college or university where they want to study. Some institutions like the Concordia University and Memorial University require deficient IELTS score for some programs. The students who choose such study programs are allowed to complete specific English courses after they start attending the course.

Exemptions for English speakers

International students hailing from English-speaking countries and those who have already completed a study in English may be exempted from the IELTS requirement. However, as the exemptions are determined by the higher education institutions, you need to check the requirements in the particular institution where you want to enroll.

Two major exemptions:

  • English-speaking countries: If you hail from an English-speaking country, the chances are high that you would be exempted from taking the IELTS test. However, you may be asked to submit copies of the grades you earned for English in high school.
  • Previous education in English/French: If you have studied English at the post-secondary level, you may be exempted from the language test.

Accepted language tests

IELTS test results are accepted by most of the higher education institutions in Canada as proof of English language proficiency. However, you must note that it is the Academic IELTS and not the General IELTS that is usually accepted by the academic institutions in Canada. Besides IELTS, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) assessment are also accepted by Canadian higher education institutions. Know more about your options to study in Canada. Contact ImmiLaw Global, the best Canada education consultants in Kerala, for more information.
