Can you bring your family to Canada while studying

The question “can I take my family to Canada while studying” always pops up when someone plans to study abroad in Canada. International students in Canada can bring their family to stay with them during their study period in Canada. Here, the family includes spouses/common-law partners and dependent children only. In addition, Canada has a generous immigration policy that allows international students to bring their spouse and/or dependent children to visit/work/study and experience the Canadian way of life and finally settle there permanently.

Bringing your Spouse or Common-law Partner

Your spouse can apply for an open work permit even without a valid job offer/ LMIA ( Labor Market Impact Assessment) from Canada. During your study period, your spouse can work full-time or part-time. When you complete your studies and receive a post-graduate work permit for up to three years, your spouse/partner will also become eligible to extend his/her work permit for the duration of your post-graduate work permit.

Bringing Your Children

You can also bring your dependent children to Canada. Your children under the age of 6 will receive a TRV (Temporary Resident Visa), and the school-going children will obtain Student Visas. The surprisingly happy news is that your kids will receive free school education at Canada’s public schools!

Staying in Canada with family after your studies

If you want to stay in Canada permanently after completing your studies, you apply for permanent residence under Federal Express Entry ( Canadian Experience Class). You may also be eligible for Provincial Nomination. You may apply for a Nomination from the Province you studied/worked. In addition, you may be eligible for Regional Immigration programs like the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program. You may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR depending on your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

The factors that improve your score are:

  • Proficiency in English/French
  • Work experience
  • Partner’s work experience
  • Partner’s language proficiency
  • Your Level of Education
  • Your Spouse’s Level of Education
  • Provincial Nomination

You can double your chances of receiving an ITA if both you and your spouse submit profiles to the Express Entry pool. Your partner’s work experience in Canada can make them eligible to receive a higher CRS score and thus an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

Bringing your Parents/grandparents

Is it possible to bring parents/grandparents to Canada? Yes, of course, you can. After having been granted Permanent Residence, one can bring one’s parents/grandparents to come and stay in Canada on a super visa for ten years!
