There have been major updates regarding the admission of international students to Canada. The rules will be stricter now, and the intake will be more controlled. A standing committee has proposed a 10-point reform plan so as to tighten the rules of the international student program.
The key proposal under the plan is to increase the requirement of a minimum bank balance for international students. This is to make sure that students are able to manage themselves in the event of increasing living costs. Another suggestion is to introduce country-specific caps on the number of student intakes. Further, the educational institutions will be monitored strictly, ensuring that they meet the quality standards and adhere to the system regulations. The compliance checks and enforcements will also be improved to ensure that the students follow the visa rules and to prevent the misuse of study permits.
The post-graduation work opportunities will also be made stricter. The work permits will be issued after checking that the work align to relevant fields of study and labour market needs.
These measures are to control the rapid growth in the number of international students, which leads to pressures on education capacity, housing, and public services. Reducing the study permits will help in controlling the growing temporary resident population and maintaining the integrity of the immigration and education system.
The changes will impact international students immensely, especially Indian students, as they are the most in number seeking admission in Canada. The students will therefore have to be competent and plan well, as admissions will be more competitive and financially demanding.
If the changes are to be implemented, then the Canada study abroad will become selective and regulated.
